In this role you will build a data platform that can reliably scale to the needs of our data analysts and growing business.

As the first dedicated data engineer, you will have the opportunity to make or help guide decision making and development at all layers of the data platform. This includes choosing and deploying compute infrastructure, building frameworks and participate in the development of an architecture designed to democratize data to everyone in the organization.

What we are looking for

  • Excellent coding and design skills (primarily Python or Java).
  • Experience developing and deploying on AWS.
  • An innate curiosity to dig into things and understand how they work
  • Scrappiness and can thrive on autonomy.
  • Ability to not make things more complex than necessary

What you can expect to work on

The entire spectrum of creating and operating a data pipeline that will ingest data to be able to perform actions such as:

  • Business performance analysis of our e-commerce business
  • Fraud detection
  • Recommendation
  • Forecasting
  • Anomaly detection
  • Classification

You will work on integrating data from multiple sources such as web and mobile apps analytics, payment providers, advertising/marketing, emails, shipping carriers, and more. As such you can expect to:

  • Formalize the definition of internal business events (eg. Avro, Thrift, Protocol Buffers)
  • Operate a data pipeline to collect analytics events (eg. fluentd, Kinesis, Kafka, …)
  • Ingest data to and from multiples data stores (eg. S3, Redshift, Postgresql, ...)
  • Operate a workflow of ETL tasks (eg. Airflow, Luigi, AWS Data Pipeline, ...)
  • Operate replication of data between datastores (eg. symmetricds, mosql, DMS, …)
  • Assist data analysts by creating views , snapshots or summary table to facilitate business analysis

Environment

  • We run on top of AWS and leverage services such as SQS, SNS, S3, EC2, Elasticache, Cloudfront, Cloudsearch, RDS, RedShift, CloudFormation, ..
  • We deploy using Ansible and we use CircleCI
  • Our frontend and internal tools are built on top of Play Framework (Scala) and NodeJs
  • Our services are written in Java on top of Dropwizard, Hibernate, Morphia, etc...
  • A lot of our integrations and processes within services leverage Apache Camel
  • Development environment is setup via Vagrant and VirtualBox
