Here at Zola, we’re seeking an exceptional Category Director to lead a new business opportunity for us.  This business is essentially a pre-launch-startup within a Series-C-startup, and we’re looking for an entrepreneurial, scrappy, analytical, creative leader who can help launch and grow this game-changing new opportunity. 

Your ultimate goal as the business lead for this opportunity will be to exponentially grow the number of couples we’re serving, while developing and testing ways to increase their lifetime value. With the big picture in mind, and a firm grasp on the details, you’ll work with a cross-functional team to execute on your strategy, anticipate and make trade-offs, identify and solve bottlenecks, and deliver an amazing customer experience while keeping the business needs in mind. 

Our ideal candidate has a track record of success at launching and growing businesses, ideally at a tech or consumer startup.  You love both building and optimizing, and both strategizing and doing.  You are a structured and creative thinker, able to toggle easily between the big themes and the little details.  You are equally comfortable in Excel and Powerpoint, and you can prove your ability to learn new systems quickly.  And you love working with kind, smart colleagues who share a commitment to putting the customer first!

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As Category Director for this new vertical, you’ll be responsible for end-to-end business decisions and execution:

  • Pre-launch:
    • Partner with the CEO and CDO to define go-to-market business plan / phasing
    • Build initial pro forma pre-launch and detailed monthly/annual plan post-launch
    • Set the budget (in partnership with the relevant departments) needed to launch and operate this business (e.g., hiring needs, operating expenses, and marketing)
    • Define key user differentiators that will be communicated via marketing team
    • Define the strategy for user engagement across all user types
    • Lead outreach to key user groups for early testing and adoption
    • Project-manage the launch timeline
    • Collaborate cross-functionally to get every department ready for launch
      • Partner with Growth team to ensure tracking and reporting MVP
      • Partner with Marketing team to ensure marketing support
      • Partner with Product and Design to communicate thinking to rest of Zola team outside of core team
      • Partner with Exec team to ensure buy-in at key points
    • Assist with hiring cross-functionally for roles dedicated to the new vertical
  • Post-Launch
    • Own the business strategy and annual plan for this new business opportunity
      • Develop the growth and monetization strategy
      • Build the annual plan and set our KPI targets – and achieve them
      • Analyze and report on performance
    • Deeply understand the customer and think creatively about how to serve them better
      • Conduct customer research and share learnings widely
      • Partner with Marketing and Product to continuously improve customer engagement, satisfaction, and retention
      • Collaborate with Product to identify new ways to delight the couple and turn those into new features or offerings
    • Lead the charge toward massive market share growth
      • Evangelize for this new business opportunity across the company
      • Iterate with Marketing on our marketing messaging and strategy
      • Identify and pursue key partnerships, with Business Development

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS and MBA required
  • 8+ years of professional experience in a fast-paced environment working in product, product marketing,  growth, strategy, business operations, or a related field
    • Startup experience strongly preferred
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams toward big goals on aggressive timelines
  • Exceptional business and customer experience judgment
  • Creative, scrappy, and customer-obsessed
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; presents effectively to a senior audience
  • Excellent quantitative and Excel skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage competing tasks in a fast-paced, highly ambiguous environment
  • Ability to build trusted business relationships across functional teams
